Course characteristic

Bachelor's degree course in Geography in Public Administration is a practically oriented discipline aimed at training professionals with geographical education for public administration in the Czech Republic. Substantial part of the study area are theoretically (general physical and human geography, cartography, regional geography) and practically (urban planning, regional development, applied landscape ecology, project management) oriented geographic subjects combined with courses in social sciences (sociology, economics, political science, law, public administration). This combination of courses which is unique in the Czech Rebublic enables understanding of the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of geography and public administration, thus increasing graduates’ success in the labor market in the Czech Republic. An integral part of the study is completing compulsory internships in public administration institutions, allowing students to become acquainted with the practical problems of public administration during the studies. Students of Geography in Public Administration are routinely involved in research activities of both departments especially in the area of regional development and public administration.

 

Graduate profile

Graduate of Bachelor's degree of Geography in Public Administration has a basic knowledge about the geographic sphere system and its individual components, in particular the subsystem of natural and social components. The graduate controls the basic methods and techniques of complex analysis of physical geographical (geology, geomorphology, climageography, pedogeography, biogeography) and human-geographical environments (population, demography, settlements, industry, agriculture, transport, services, tourism) in the regional units of various levels (community, district, county, State, continent, earth). Graduates are able to analyze these components through basic statistical methods and lessons learned to interpret demanding cartographic methods and the methods of the geographic information systems (GIS).

The graduate controls the principles and methods of organization and management of regional departments of public authorities (State and local government). He knows the basic principles of their activities, their rights and obligations. The graduate is familiar with the basic principles of administrative law and instruments that are used in the public administration system and also controls the laws and principles of the macroeconomic and the microeconomic sphere.

The graduate has wide possibilities to apply in the bodies of all levels of State and local government (municipal, district, regional, State). He also has wide possibilities of applying as a qualified expert in the applied sphere (institutions dealing with regional development, environmental issues, etc.) or in business.
